HDMI cable categories: buy the bandwidth you need, not the biggest version number
HDMI Licensing Administrator defines official cable categories. Those names are more useful than a reseller calling something an “HDMI 2.1 cable” or “8K cable.”
Cables have official category names
HDMI specifications describe what source devices, displays, and other components may support. Cable categories describe the tested cable class intended to carry the required link bandwidth.
HDMI Licensing Administrator explicitly says HDMI cables should be marketed using their official cable names. That is a useful shopping rule because a phrase such as “HDMI 2.1 cable” can blur together several different ideas: the source port, the display port, enabled features, and the cable itself.

Why “supports 8K” is not a complete cable specification
Resolution is only one part of video bandwidth. Refresh rate, color depth, chroma format, compression, and other link behavior change how much data must be transported. Two setups that both say “4K” can therefore require very different bandwidth.
This is one reason the official cable category is a better starting point than a single marketing resolution. An Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable is certified for the 48Gbps class, while the newer Ultra96 HDMI Cable is designed for system configurations requiring up to 96Gbps.
Ultra High Speed: the 48Gbps class
The Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable category was introduced with HDMI 2.1. HDMI LA describes it as applicable to system configurations supporting up to 48Gbps maximum bandwidth. It is the cable class associated with high-bandwidth modes including 4K120 and 8K60 in supported systems.
Certified Ultra High Speed cables participate in a mandatory certification program. Packages carry a certification label that can be verified, which is more meaningful than an unsupported claim such as “future proof” or “gaming grade.”
Ultra96: the 96Gbps class
HDMI 2.2 introduced the Ultra96 HDMI Cable category. HDMI LA states that the cable supports up to 96Gbps and all HDMI 2.2 applications. It is intended for the new highest-bandwidth system configurations, including modes above the 48Gbps ceiling of Ultra High Speed.
That does not mean every new television or monitor needs an Ultra96 cable. HDMI LA's own guidance distinguishes systems that need more than 48Gbps from those that do not. If the source and display never use a link mode above the 48Gbps class, extra cable bandwidth does not create a new display capability by itself.
The cable cannot upgrade the ports
For any target mode, the source device, output port, cable, input port, display electronics, and enabled format all have to support the required path. Features such as variable refresh rate, dynamic HDR behavior, eARC, or a specific high-refresh format are not guaranteed merely because a cable belongs to the newest category.
Which category should you look for?
1080p and ordinary 4K setups
Do not assume you need the newest cable solely because the display is 4K. Check the actual resolution, refresh rate, HDR/color mode, and device requirements. Existing certified categories may already cover the needed link bandwidth.
4K at 120Hz or other high-bandwidth 48Gbps-class setups
Ultra High Speed is the relevant certified cable category to investigate. Confirm that the source and display also support the intended mode on the ports being used.
HDMI 2.2 features above the 48Gbps class
Look for the Ultra96 feature/cable requirements in the actual equipment specifications. If the product advertises a maximum link bandwidth of 64, 80, or 96Gbps under the Ultra96 feature naming, HDMI LA says an Ultra96 HDMI Cable is required to ensure that maximum bandwidth is supported.
How to avoid cable-listing noise
- Ignore decorative adjectives first: “premium,” “gaming,” “cinema,” and “future ready” are not bandwidth specifications.
- Find the official HDMI cable category name.
- Look for the relevant certification label on certified Ultra cable products.
- Check the exact source and display mode you need.
- Only move to a higher category when the end-to-end system actually requires it.

Choose HDMI cables by official category and the real bandwidth requirement of your setup. A higher category can provide headroom, but it cannot create features that the source or display does not support.
