Monitor dimensions: diagonal inches are only half the measurement
A 32-inch display is not 32 inches wide. The advertised size is the diagonal of the visible panel. To get the actual width and height, you also need the aspect ratio.

Why the diagonal is not enough
Display marketing usually gives you one number: the diagonal. That number tells you the distance from one visible corner of the panel to the opposite corner. It does not tell you how that diagonal is divided between horizontal and vertical space.
The aspect ratio supplies the missing relationship. A 16:9 panel is wider relative to its height than a 4:3 panel. A 21:9 ultrawide is wider still. Two displays can therefore share the same diagonal while having noticeably different widths, heights, and screen areas.
The calculation
If the aspect ratio is written as w:h and the diagonal is d, the panel dimensions are:
The result is in the same unit as the diagonal. Because monitor diagonals are normally quoted in inches, multiply the answer by 2.54 to convert inches to centimeters. NIST documents the international inch as exactly 25.4 mm.

Values are rounded panel dimensions. Real products may quote a slightly different viewable area, and the enclosure adds extra width and height.
A 34-inch ultrawide is not simply a larger 27-inch screen
A common comparison is 27-inch 16:9 versus 34-inch 21:9. The 34-inch ultrawide is dramatically wider, but its panel height is only slightly greater: roughly 34.0 cm high versus about 33.6 cm for the 27-inch 16:9 example above.
That is why an ultrawide can feel like “more room to the sides” rather than a uniformly enlarged image. If your priority is larger text and vertically larger content, the diagonal number alone can be misleading.
Screen size and resolution are separate specifications
Physical size tells you the dimensions of the panel. Resolution tells you how many pixels the panel contains. A 27-inch 1920×1080 display and a 27-inch 3840×2160 display have almost the same physical panel size, but very different pixel density.
This also means that “4K” does not imply a particular number of inches, and “32-inch” does not imply a particular resolution. What to measure before buying
- Panel dimensions: useful for comparing the visible screen itself.
- Full chassis width and height: the bezel makes the product larger than the calculated panel.
- Stand depth: often the most important desk-fit measurement and impossible to infer from diagonal size.
- Maximum and minimum stand height: relevant if the display must fit beneath a shelf or align with another monitor.
- VESA mount position: if you are using an arm, check the manufacturer's mechanical drawing rather than assuming all screens of the same size mount the same way.
Bottom line
Use diagonal size for a rough class of display, but use width, height, and stand depth to decide whether the monitor actually fits your space. Aspect ratio is the missing piece that converts the diagonal marketing number into real physical dimensions.
